Laser solid sampling for micro-chemical analysis

Research Goal

I investigated with my colleagues at LBNL the affect of laser-induced plasma on the absorption of laser-light on an irradiated target. The amount of energy absorbed by the plasma affected the mass ablation rate, compositional analysis, and the temperature and emission distribution within the laser-induced plume above the target. My main contribution in the eight papers published in this area was the energetics of the laser-matter interactions, including radiative and diffusive heat transfer, electron and atomic energies, and particle velocity and temperature distributions.
