Laser ablation of opaque solids for micromachining

Research Goal

In general, ablating materials is a highly non-linear process that is difficult to predict and control. The change in energy absorbed as a cavity is etched during laser micromachining is difficult to predict ab initio, and in general requires a full numerical analysis of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and E&M. To simplify the problem to obtain reasonable results and extract the important physical parameters underlying the process, I developed a new theory based on radiative heat transfer, and experimentally investigated the theory. Two papers were published in Applied Surface Science : the first details the theory and the second paper shows the experimental results verifying the theory. (ONR)
