Research Goal
This interaction can change the medium's index of refraction through thermal and electronic interactions, particularly at high laser intensities. Thus, we are investigating laser-induced spatial modulation of the intensity field, and changes in focal plane of the incident laser beam. Understanding these coupled interactions is important for laser micromachining of materials in a surrounding medium. Two papers on the modeling, analysis, and computational methods of light propagation in self-induced inhomogeneous media have been published, and a third on the effect that such propagation has on laser assisted chemical etching (LACE) of microstructures in silicon.
