Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering offers graduate study leading to the master's and doctoral degrees in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. Graduate work is conducted in the fields of fluid mechanics, solid mechanics and materials, dynamics, applied mathematics, and computational science and engineering.
The course work and optional thesis leading to the Master of Science degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics prepare students for research-and-development positions in industry and government, and for further graduate study at the doctoral level. Approximately one to two years of study beyond the bachelor's degree are needed to complete the master’s degree requirements.
The course work and thesis leading to the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics prepare students for advanced research-and-development positions in industry and government, and for teaching and research positions in universities. Approximately five years of study beyond the bachelor's degree, or four years beyond the master’s degree, are needed to complete the doctoral degree requirements.
